Improvisations started this week with the three actors, and\nthe crew filming and recording sound. Of course, the starting point, after a\ngroup warm up that included both cast and crew, was the question, \u201cWhat makes\nyou who you are\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On day one of the impros (16 Jan), we did a series of\nexercises set in a cafe and in a warung (food stall) where the actors\nexperimented with different aspects of character identity – age, gender, ethnicity,\nclass, sexual orientation, etc. – based on key words. It\u2019s interesting to see\nhow people make assumptions about others based on visual and aural clues and\nalready interesting to notice the gap between public and private selves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What makes you who you are will ultimately be installed in\nthe gallery, but Caglar is interested in using the entire PSBK site, and there\nwill be AR markers installed around the site that trigger additional content.\nHe is also looking for interesting places around PSBK to shoot scenes. To open\nthis up, he asked the cast and crew to locate two places at PSBK, one that\nmakes you feel comfortable or protected, and another that makes you feel\nuncomfortable or threatened. Cast and crew were asked to shootphotos of those\ntwo places and send them via WhatsApp to Caglar. These images were amazing,\nboth visually and in terms of revealing aspects of the characters, and we will\ndefinitely be using some of them as locations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At the end of the day, Caglar used \u201chot seating\u201d to further\ndevelop some of the characters that had come to life. This is where the actor\nsits down and answers a series of questions in character. The questions can be\nabout any detail of their life and it\u2019s a very revealing impro technique to\ndiscover deeper aspects of each character.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

All of this was filmed and recordedby two cameras at once,\nwhich allows different perspectives and can be used for split screen if\ndesired.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Day two (17 Jan) continued with more improvising, using some\nof the material from the first day and developing additional characters and\nscenes. Caglar had asked each actor to think of two people who were major\ninfluences in their lives, one positive and one negative.  This could be autobiographical, or about\nsomeone they knew. Caglar used these influencers as the basis for scenes where\npeople interact with significant people in their past. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

By the end of the day, three characters had emerged, one for\neach actor, that Caglar is interesting in focusing on throughout the filming\nnext week: Nadira will play Jana, Albert will play Retno and Patricia (Via)\nwill play Aik. Note that these names are all non-gender specific, so we\u2019re\nleaving that door open for now.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Improvising with the Azwar and Yudi, we found and capture abrilliant\nscene, a simpleset-up where the characters come out of the rain into an\nabandoned building that was shot in the darkenedLayang Layangstudio, with rain\npounding in the background. The characters didn\u2019t speak to each other, and yet\nso much was revealed. Caglar said he already knew that would form part of the\nfinal installation. A great way to end the day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A shout out to Katrin, our Indonesian-English translator. Although\nall the actors speak English, we are shooting everything in Bahasa Indonesia,\nwhich Katrin is live translating on set, using her laptop and Google docs.\nCaglar is able to follow along on his own laptop to tune into the dialogue.\nKatrin is then going home to transcribe and translate all the footage, so that\nwe have .SRT (captioning) files for all the videos as we edit. A huge\nundertaking!<\/p>\n\n\n

Improvisasi dimulai pada minggu ini dengan tiga aktor,\nbeserta kru film dan juru suara. Tentu saja diawali dengan, setelah pemanasan\nkelompok yang melibatkan aktor dan kru, pertanyaan: “Apa yang menjadikan\nkamu jadi kamu”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Pada hari pertama improvisasi (16 Jan), kami melakukan\nserangkaian latihan dengan set di sebuah kafe dan warung di mana para aktor\nbereksperimen dengan berbagai aspek identitas karakter \u2013 usia, jenis kelamin,\netnis, kelas, orientasi seksual. , dll. \u2013 berdasarkan beberapa kata kunci.\nSangat menarik untuk melihat bagaimana orang membuat asumsi tentang orang lain\nberdasarkan petunjuk visual dan aural serta menarik pula untuk memperhatikan\nkesenjangan antara diri secara publik dan diri secara pribadi.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Di penghujung hari, Caglar menggunakan “kursi\npanas” untuk lebih mengembangkan beberapa karakter yang telah muncul. Di\nsinilah aktor duduk dan menjawab serangkaian pertanyaan sebagai karakter.\nPertanyaannya bisa mengenai detail kehidupan mereka. Itu merupakan teknik\nimprovisasi yang sangat menyingkap aspek setiap karakter secara lebih mendalam.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Semua ini difilmkan dan direkam oleh dua kamera sekaligus, yang\nmemungkinkan perspektif yang berbeda dan dapat digunakan untuk layar terpisah\njika diinginkan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hari kedua (17 Jan) diadakan improvisasi lanjutan dengan\nmenggunakan beberapa materi dari hari pertama, serta mengembangkan tambahan karakter\ndan adegan. Caglar telah meminta setiap aktor untuk memikirkan dua orang yang memberi\npengaruh besar dalam hidup mereka, satu positif dan satu negatif. Ini bisa\nberupa pengalaman pribadi, atau tentang seseorang yang mereka kenal. Caglar\nmenggunakan orang-orang yang memberi pengaruh ini sebagai dasar untuk adegan di\nmana mereka berinteraksi dengan orang-orang penting di masa lalu mereka.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
